About the RCSI FNM Aptitude Test
First introduced in 2015, the RCSI FNM Aptitude Test assesses the readiness of internationally trained nurses applying to register as General Nurses with the NMBI. In 2022, the test was expanded to include Psychiatric Nurses.
It serves as a compensation measure for those required by the NMBI to demonstrate equivalent competence to newly qualified nurses in Ireland.
Eligibility criteria:
- Your NMBI decision letter must specify that you are applying to the General or Psychiatric Nurses Division
- The letter must also state that a compensation measure is required, with the RCSI test listed as an option
Next test date: 22 June 2025
Test Structure
Part 1: Theory Test (Multiple Choice Questions)
- 150 MCQs
- Duration: Three hours
- Minimum pass mark: 50%
- Must be passed before taking the practical test
Part 2: Practical Test (OSCE)
- Objective Structured Clinical Examination
- General nurses complete clinical-based stations
- Psychiatric nurses complete 14 OSCE stations covering specific competencies
- All stations must be passed
Note: Candidates are permitted two attempts at each part. If the theory is failed, the full test must be retaken. For OSCEs, only failed stations must be repeated. A minimum two-week interval between attempts is strongly recommended.

Preparing for Success
Applicants are advised to refer to the NMBI’s Nurse Registration Programmes Standards and Requirements, 4th edition (2016) for guidance. Additional preparation resources, including a breakdown of OSCE stations and suggested reading topics, can be found on the RCSI website.
While self-study is important, a structured training programme can significantly improve performance and confidence. This is where Source can support you.
