Mr Tim Mitchell

Mr Tim Mitchell, MRCS (FRCS) is a British consultant otolaryngologist (ENT surgeon) and the President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, a role he began in July 2023 after being elected by his peers. He is responsible for representing the College’s nearly 30,000 members and driving strategic priorities for surgical education, training, equity, and professional standards across the UK and internationally. Tim Mitchell studied Medicine at Brasenose College, Oxford before undertaking training in ENT surgery in Oxford, London and Cambridge, where he developed a subspecialty interest in ear surgery. In 1997, he was awarded the inaugural Graham Fraser Memorial Fellowship training in cochlear implantation and other aspects of ear surgery with Professor Bill Gibson in Sydney. In 2003, he was awarded a TWJ Travelling Fellowship to develop techniques in stapedectomy surgery with Professor Robert Vincent at the Causse Ear Clinic in Beziers in southwest France.

He was appointed as a Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon in Southampton in 2000 providing a subspecialist otology service for children and adults. He has an honorary contract with the University of Southampton Auditory Implant Service providing cochlear implants and other implantable hearing devices.

Tim has also had a major interest in training and assessment of surgeons in training. He has been a MRCS examiner since 2004 and was elected Chair of the Court of Examiners from 2014 to 2017. He has examined for MRCS examinations in Egypt, India, Malaysia, UAE and Sri Lanka and has been external examiner for ENT examinations in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. He was a member of the Specialist Advisory Committees for ENT and Audio vestibular Medicine from 2012 to 2017.

He has been a trustee of ENT UK and a member of the Council of the British Society of Otology. In 2019, he was awarded honorary membership of the Medical Women’s Federation in recognition of his support for women in surgery.

Tim was elected to the Council of RCS England in 2017 and elected as Vice President in 2020.  He was the Council lead for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion overseeing implementation of the Kennedy Report. In 2023, he was elected as President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and will serve a 3 year term until July 2026.

Mr Mitchell has long been involved in surgical assessment and governance. He has served as an MRCS examiner since 2004, was Chair of the Court of Examiners (2014–2017), and has examined internationally. He has been actively involved in surgical professional bodies including ENT UK and served on specialist advisory committees.
